Elaine Cash, Senior Lecturer / Riding Instructor, Kemptville Campus

Agriculture-Equine Diploma

I'd like to introduce myself first on paper before we get to know each other in class. I grew up in England where I spent every spare moment in the company of horses and ponies. After school I studied for the British Horse Society Horsemasters Certificate in 1979 and the following year left the hills of Cheshire for employment, education and adventure in Europe.

I spent many years traveling and working in the horse industry. I mainly worked with show jumpers in Austria and Germany but my job took me to many other countries where I made friends and had lots of experiences. I learnt that life can be just as tough to work for an elite professional as it is a nobody, so I decided early to surround myself with the best and absorb as much as I could. I have worked with and for some of the best riders and stables in the world, and was usually given the job of training the "new grooms" as they came in.

Before arriving in Canada in 1999 I spent several years in the U.S. where I continued to learn and teach. I traveled with the United Stated Equestrian Team to the world cup in Berlin in 1984 and also did a European tour. I have been working at Kemptville College in the Equine Programs for 14 years. Over those years I have worn many hats from Barn Manager to Lecturer. Currently I teach the Stable Management course and English Riding. Oh, and I probably should mention I am a CEF level I coach.

Besides teaching at the Campus, my interests cover a wide range of horse related things. I designed and am in the process of building my own training and breeding facility. I enjoy riding and developing my own horses. My horse "Gibson" was long listed for the Canadian Eventing Team in 2004 with Kyle Carter. I am a riding/training stable management clinic "junkie" and I constantly work on developing new material to present to my students. I live in Prescott with my family, dogs, kittens and horses.

I hope you have a great education and a good time while with us at Kemptville Campus, U.of Guelph. I look forward to learning with you.

Elaine
